En Julio de 1979, "Good Times" por Chic (Atlantic) llega al número 1 del chart de musica pop y se convierte en el favorito. En septiembre de 1979 "Rapper Delight" fue editado y se convirtió en el primer single de hip hop editado en el sello Sugar Hill, formado en Nueva Jersey con anterioridad por la ex cantante de R&B Sylvia Robinson. Fue el primer sigle de hip hop en entrar en el Top 40. El género musical conocido como "hip hop" toma su nombre de la primera línea de esta canción.
